A robust Printer should not mean a well-complicated setup, and with PIXMA G6020 MegaTank All-In-One, it takes only a few minutes with Canon Wireless Connect.
Canon PIXMA G6020 Design
The overall design of the PIXMA G6020 is quite a standard inkjet printer fare. It features a matte black finish over a box profile, with the scanner base slightly pasted from the rest of the body. Lifting the top cover shows the scanner base, while lifting the scanner base itself shows the inside, allowing you to install two ink cartridges and clear paper blockages.
Close the printer again, you will find the control panel just below the flatbed scanner. It’s tilted for easy access, but you have to do it manually, and it looks like a relic from a different age.
Instead of the large and colorful touch screen like most of the PIXMA G6020’s competitors, this control panel features a small, narrow two-line LCD screen. All the buttons are physical and include a back and forth arrow that you will use to page back and forth endlessly through the options on the small screen.
On the left and right of the control panel, the PIXMA G6020 features four large ink tanks with covers on the case that allow you to see the ink levels at a glance. This is a nifty feature because it takes all the guesswork out of wondering how much ink is left, and it also looks really good.
Below the control panel, you’ll find a pull-out mechanism designed for capturing documents and photos after printing, and the main paper tray. Another tray can be found on the back, allowing you to load two types of paper at once.
Setup Process
Setting up the PIXMA G6020 is not a difficult process, but it takes longer than a typical inkjet. This starts with removing the packing tape, just like any other AIO, and then you have to install the printer cartridge. As I mentioned earlier, this cartridge is connected to the ink tank by a series of tubes, and you only need to install it once.
The next step is to add ink, and this printer comes with a lot of ink, with one large black ink tank and a smaller tank for cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes. Each tank is covered by a folding stopper, and you must carefully empty the correct bottle into the correct tank.
There’s nothing to stop you from accidentally putting a color in the wrong place, so you have to be careful to match the color of the plug with the color of the ink or dye. It’s easy to fill each tank without spilling, but carelessness during this step can easily lead to a big mess.
Once you have filled the tank, you can proceed with the setup. There’s no setup wizard, but turning on the printer and continuing with its prompts will eventually get you to the point where smartphone apps can take over. Using the Canon app on my Android phone, I was able to connect the PIXMA G6020 to my Wi-Fi network and was ready to print without any problems.
Printing Quality: Excellent monochrome and color printouts
The PIXMA G6020 produces impressive high-quality prints in monochrome and full color. Text is crisp and sharp, even when printing small fonts, in my monochrome text documents. Colors are a little faded when printing graphics on plain paper, but that’s just to be expected. When printing full color photos on glossy paper, the results are fantastic.
Canon PIXMA G6020 Print Speed
While this printer puts out high-quality documents and photos, you get them at the expense of speed. Printing a series of monochrome text documents, the PIXMA G6020 works hard and even struggles to hit 13 pages per minute (ppm), which is its scalable output. It’s faster than some of the inkjet printers I’ve tested, but a little slower for heavy office or business use.
When printing documents that include a mixture of black and white and color, including text, graphics, and charts, I timed the PIXMA G6020 at a much slower 4.5ppm. It may differ depending on the type and layout of the graphics you are printing, but the fact is this printer is not a speedster.
I also printed a variety of photos in 4×6 inch and 8×10 inch formats and found the time there quite average. The shot in the borderless 4×6 inch format took more than 30 seconds to run, which is more or less in line with most AIO printers I’ve used.
Scanning and Copying: The flatbed works fine, but there is no ADF
The flatbed scanner that came with the PIXMA G6020 worked fine, and I had no problems scanning or copying documents. Color photos also scan well. The problem here is that it’s an all-in-one without an automatic document feeder, which really hinders the usability of the scanner. It’s there if you need it for a single scan, but scanning multi-page documents is a huge pain.
If you have an ADF scanner in another device, or you don’t need a scanner at all, Canon has the PIXMA G5050, which is basically this printer without a scanner.
Operating Costs
As a MegaTank printer, you benefit from the fact that you are essentially buying large quantities of ink, filling up large tanks yourself instead of replacing expensive low-volume cartridges.
In the same way as high volume cartridges lowering costs on other printers, getting rid of replaceable cartridges and using large tanks allows the PIXMA G6020 to offer high-quality results for less than a penny per page.
The PIXMA G6020 comes with a generous ink supply in the box too, which helps to pay for the cost of the printer itself.
Canon PIXMA G6020 Connectivity
The PIXMA G6020 is equipped with an Ethernet port for wired connectivity and as a USB type B connector which you can use if you have a PictBridge compatible camera or video recorder.
I make extensive use of the Wi-Fi connection via the Canon PRINT app on my Android phone and Windows 10, but the printer also supports AirPrint, Cloud Print, and Mopria.
While the PIXMA G6020 has decent connectivity options for wired and wireless connections, near-field communication (NFC) is missing and there is no way to print directly from a memory card or USB drive. Like any other shortcut, removing this option is possible to keep prices low.
Paper Handling
With a large front tray and additional rear tray, the PIXMA G6020 holds plenty of paper to get work done in most home office situations and even some small business environments.
Both trays are adjustable, allowing you to dedicate the front to A4 paper and the back to envelopes, 4×6 inch photo paper, or several other options. While setting the paper size using the ancient control panel is a bit of a hassle, the size and flexibility of the paper tray are the best possible.
Canon PIXMA G6020 Price
With an MSRP of $ 270 and a street price of close to $ 249, the PIXMA G6020 is a good enough price for an all-in-one inkjet that has the print quality, paper capacity and print speed to handle home and small business applications. The ADF’s ominousness is a little hard to accept, but you can bypass the scanner altogether and check out the PIXMA G5020 which usually retails for under $ 230 if that sounds like the better option.
The real kicker is the amount of ink this printer delivers, as it comes with enough black and color ink to fill the tank, plus two additional bottles of black ink. It comes with nearly $ 100 worth of ink when all is said and done, which helps justify the printer’s price tag despite some odd flaws.
Canon PIXMA G6020 Printer Versus Canon MAXIFY MB5420
With an MSRP of $ 330 and a street price of around $ 280, the Canon MAXIFY MB5420 (see Amazon) is typically priced slightly higher than the PIXMA G6020, but there is some overlap. There are also some overlapping functions, as they are both Canon’s AIO inkjet printers, but the strengths are different enough that it’s hard to pick a clear winner.
The advantage of the PIXMA G6020 is its low operating costs, which are achieved by being a MegaTank printer that takes advantage of the masses to lower costs. The MAXIFY MB5420 doesn’t have that advantage, so its printing costs are roughly double that of the PIXMA for monochrome and even higher for color.
The MAXIFY MB5420 wins general use as an office or small business machine, with faster print times, comparable monochrome print quality, and the inclusion of an ADF. The ADF even has one-way duplex scanning, making this printer a fantastic choice for anyone who has to scan or copy multiple two-sided documents. MAXIFY also has a very large 500 sheet paper tray capacity and a large XL ink tank.
The bottom line is that the PIXMA G6020 is worth checking out if you don’t do a lot of scanning, its cost per print is hard to beat, and it’s better at photo printing, but the MAXIFY MB5420 is a more capable little office. and business machines with slightly higher operating costs.
